Dr Chris Upton – ‘The Priestley Riots’. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was a theologian, dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, liberal thinker and chemist and is credited with the discovery of oxygen.
He lived in Birmingham from 1780 until he was driven out by the religiously motivated mob violence in 1791 in the Birmingham riots that bear his name.
