The Lickey Hills Society

The Lickey Hills Society (LHS) was formed in 1984 to:

1. Help preserve the landscape and natural beauty of the Hills and surrounding area.
2. Resist inappropriate developments which would have a detrimental effect on the Hills.
3. Support the work of the Country Park Rangers to help enhance the Hills

As well as the Country Park, the Society’s brief includes the area from Rubery in the north to the M42 in the south; and from Marlbrook and the A38 in the west to the Bittell reservoirs in the east.

Initially the Society was formed to campaign against proposals for a plastic ski slope on Rednal Hill. After a determined campaign by the Society and others, the plans were withdrawn and Rednal Hill remains in its ‘natural state’. Since then other campaigns have sought to limit development on the edges of the Hills, particularly on Beacon Hill. We still maintain a ‘watching brief’, monitoring planning applications as there is still land available for possible future development.

The Society actively promotes awareness and understanding of the Hills. Before 1990 other Country Parks had Visitor Centres, but not the Lickeys. Following pressure from the LHS and others, Birmingham City Council agreed to build the popular Visitor Centre in Warren Lane.

The Society enjoys a close working relationship with the Park Rangers, and it is very appreciative of what they do. To help support their educational work, the Society has provided equipment such as bat detectors, microscopes, nest box cameras and TVs. Support for the Rangers also takes a practical form with our activities like litter picks, heathland clearance and assaults on the invasive Himalayan Balsam.

The Society has a programme of talks, walks and visits for members and the public, which complement the extensive Ranger Service events. Meetings normally take place at The Trinity Centre, Lickey and are advertised in the Visitor Centre and in local libraries.

The Society is a registered charity and is affiliated to other like-minded societies.
